Visiting a Grave on Tisha B'Av

AA

Question

Greetings, esteemed Rabbi. My mother is in mourning for my grandmother, and she wants to know what is customary to pray by the grave on Tisha B'Av. Thank you very much.

Answer

To the questioner,

The custom is not to visit the grave during the first year of mourning (except for the days of the shivah and the shloshim).

For others visiting the cemetery, the opinion of the Mishnah Berurah (Orach Chaim 557, subparagraph 41) is that one should not walk over the graves themselves on Tisha B'Av - but rather stand within the cemetery at a distance of four amot and pray.

I am not aware of any special prayer to be recited at the cemetery on Tisha B'Av.

Best regards,

Rabbi Nachum
