Interpretation of 'Ben Ne'ot HaMeridot'
Question
Hello Rabbi,
I recently heard the saying 'Ben Ne'ot HaMeridot' – I would appreciate an explanation and to know whether it can be inferred from this that it is not good for a girl, if she sees a suitable boy for her, to kind of approach him, of course if something arises and they meet in a modest manner.
Because there is a recent phenomenon where boys do not initiate and girls want to get married, is it possible if a girl sees a good boy to try? Or is it better to avoid this?
I speak for myself and for girls who are delayed in matchmaking and really want to get married.
And at religious matchmaking events, the girls are strongly encouraged to try and initiate in order to reduce the phenomenon of late singlehood and to establish families in Israel.
Thank you and good tidings to all.
Answer
Hello and blessings,
It is clear that there is a great mitzvah for the daughters of Israel to try to build their homes and to try to inspire the boy to want her by any permissible means possible.
Many interpretations have been said about the verse that King Saul said regarding his son Jonathan, and even according to the interpretation that he referred to his mother because she tempted him to marry her, it is clear that this is just a verse said to criticize Jonathan and does not mean that his mother’s actions were wrong. When we admonish someone, we sometimes use a harsh remark without real intent; the goal is just to emphasize the point we want to impart morality on.
With blessings,
