Women
Merits for Conceiving
Question
My name is Sarah, and I would like to be blessed with children. What shall I do to make this happen soon? Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings,
Here are several merits that can assist in achieving a viable pregnancy -
1. Performing the mitzvah of sending away the mother bird by both husband and wife is a merit for a viable pregnancy (as stated in the Midrash Devarim Rabbah Parashah 6, Section 6, and what is the reward for the mitzvah of sending away the mother bird? If you do not have children, I will give you children, as it is written: "You shall send away the mother bird," and what reward do you receive? "And the children you shall take for yourself." The Sefer HaChinuch states that this mitzvah is a means to sustain life, as children are the perpetuation of a person and his remembrance. This was also advised by Rav Ovadiah Yosef zt"l to a couple who had not yet been blessed with children, to fulfill the mitzvah of sending away the mother bird, and he said to the woman, 'You should also help him find a nest.' It is worth noting the advice of Rav Chaim Kanievsky shlit"a as well.)
2. After lighting the Shabbat candles, the woman should say Hannah's prayer in the First Book of Samuel, Chapter 2, verses 1-10. It is good that she understands what she is saying and recites it with intention (Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, Section 89, Clause 2, mentioned in Kaf HaChaim, Section 243, Letter Dalet).
3. Two distinguished Kohanim in the Land of Israel should mention her name for a blessing every day before the priestly blessing and focus their intention on her during their blessing (Responsa Teshubot V'Hanhagot, Part 1, Section 556, and Part 4, Section 236).
4. To request from a mohel or sandak before the circumcision to mention her name and her husband's name for blessings (Teshubot V'Hanhagot, Part 1, same).
5. To thoroughly check the mezuzot, even if purchased from an expert, as it is not uncommon for something minor to be missing that invalidates them. Afterward, check the scrolls and the houses of the tefillin to see if they are valid and beautiful. Then check the marriage contract, as it is common that the names are not written correctly, and a new contract may be needed according to Jewish law (Teshubot V'Hanhagot, Part 4, same).
6. A wonderful merit is to accept upon oneself at the night of immersion that if Hashem helps and she becomes pregnant, she should recite "Nishmat Kol Chai" with full intention and joy. It is good to set aside charity on the night of immersion for Torah scholars, that they may pray on behalf of this merit for blessed children who are Torah scholars (Teshubot V'Hanhagot, same).
7. To pray at the grave of Hannah the Prophetess, who is buried near her son, Samuel the Prophet, as well as at the grave of Rachel our Matriarch (Merits of Our Sages, page 96, and it is good to read there the story of Hannah and her prayer. The reason for praying specifically at their graves is that both experienced great sorrow until they earned the blessing of children).
8. To receive blessings from the great and righteous leaders of the generation, as the blessing of a righteous person has a significant impact, and a righteous person decrees, and the Holy One, blessed be He, fulfills.
Wishing you good news shortly,
