Haircuts in the Week Following the 17th of Tammuz

AA

Question

Is it permissible to get a haircut in the coming week (after the 17th of Tammuz, before Rosh Chodesh Av)? Thank you very much

Answer

Greetings,

1. According to the custom of Sephardim, it is permissible to get a haircut during the three weeks until the week of Tisha B'Av. Immediately after Tisha B'Av, haircuts are allowed (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim, Siman 558, paragraphs 3-4; and Chazon Ovadia, Arba Ta'anit, page 285). However, the custom of Ashkenazim is to refrain from haircuts from the 17th of Tammuz until midday of the 10th of Av (Rem"a, ibid., paragraph 4; and Mishnah Berurah, Siman 558, note 3).

2. It is permitted for Sephardi girls to get a haircut even in the week that includes Tisha B'Av (see Chazon Ovadia, ibid., pages 263-264, and Or Letziyon, Part 3, page 284, paragraph 3). However, Ashkenazi girls should avoid doing so from the 17th of Tammuz until midday of the 10th of Av (see Mishnah Berurah, Siman 558, note 578; and Asheri Ha'ish, Part 3, Chapter 68, paragraph 14).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
