Can One Who Violates Shabbat Wear Tzitzit?
Question
Hello, esteemed rabbi. I am Sephardi and would like to ask according to Sephardi halacha, if we have a religious person who has weakened and has come to the point of working on Shabbat or, G-d forbid, smoking on Shabbat, but still wishes to wear tzitzit under their clothes, is it permitted for him to wear tzitzit on Shabbat, or is he obligated to remove them? Thank you very much.
Answer
Dear,
It is permitted for one who violates Shabbat to wear tzitzit, and he fulfills a mitzvah in doing so (see Rambam, Laws of Prayer and the Priestly Blessing, Chapter 15, Halacha 6). However, he should be careful that others do not notice that he is wearing tzitzit due to the violation of Hashem's name.
Blessings,
Hillel Meirs
