Is it Permissible to Listen to Secular Music?

AA

Question

Hello, my name is Yael, and recently I have begun to strengthen my connection to the beauty of our Judaism. I am aware that strengthening one’s faith and returning to observance includes distancing oneself from certain things, and my question is whether there is a problem with listening to secular music?

Answer

Hello

The sounds of music themselves are not forbidden; however, the lyrics that accompany the sounds need to be examined. If they contain inappropriate content or lead to undesirable thoughts, such songs are absolutely prohibited. There is no difference between secular and Hebrew songs; unfortunately, there are also Hebrew songs that one should not listen to.

When the content of foreign lyrics is not understood, there is a leniency, and indeed some of the great ones in Israel have been lenient in this regard. However, sometimes the inappropriate messages within the song can lead one to undesired thoughts even without understanding the meanings of the words.

A level of piety would suggest not listening to any music created by an artist who does not adhere to the observance of Torah and commandments, as the sounds of music come from the heart and enter the heart. It is highly recommended to listen to sounds that are filled with love for Hashem and His eternal Torah. However, as mentioned, there is no prohibition according to the law.

Good luck - Menashe Israel
