What Does It Mean to Be Wholehearted with Hashem?

Question

With Hashem's help, esteemed rabbi, what is the interpretation of the verse "You shall be wholehearted with Hashem, your God"? Please provide a simple explanation. Thank you.

Answer

Hello and blessings,

Rashi explains (Deuteronomy 18:13) that being wholehearted with Hashem means to walk with Him in simplicity and to expect from Him alone. One should not inquire about the future through other means, but rather accept whatever comes upon oneself with simplicity, and in this way, one will be with Him and His portion.

Furthermore, Ramban elaborates and writes that the meaning of being wholehearted with Hashem is to dedicate our hearts solely to Him, believing that He alone does everything and knows the true nature of all future events. We should seek guidance about the future only from Him, through His prophets or His righteous ones, such as the Urim and Tumim (divine tools for decision-making), and not from astrologers or others. We should not rely on their words at all, but if we hear something from them, we should say that everything is in the hands of Heaven.

For He is the God of gods, exalted above all, capable of changing the arrangements of the stars and constellations as He wills, thereby nullifying the false signs and magicians. We must believe that all that will come to pass will be according to how much a person dedicates themselves to their service of Him. Thus, after warning against seeking for the future from sorcerers or from the dead on behalf of the living, it is stated that one should be wholehearted with Hashem in all these matters and should not fear a future teller, but should seek His prophet and listen to Him, for this is a positive commandment.

Wishing you success,

Benjamin Shmueli
