When Is Tachanun Not Recited?
Question
Hello, I recently accepted upon myself to recite Hamapil before sleeping. There is a section of confession, and the siddur states that on days when Tachanun is not recited, one should not say the confession. I wanted to know when Tachanun is not recited — meaning, on which days of the year should the confession in Kriat Shema Al HaMitah be omitted?
Answer
Greetings,
Tachanun is not recited on Shabbat or on holidays, nor on the fifteenth of Av (Tu B’Av) and the fifteenth of Shevat (Tu B’Shevat), on Rosh Chodesh, Chanukah, Purim Katan, and Purim (the major Purim). It is also omitted on Pesach Sheni (the 14th and 15th of Iyar), on Lag BaOmer, on the day before Rosh Hashanah, throughout the entire month of Nisan, on Tisha B’Av, from the eve of Yom Kippur until after Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, and from the beginning of Rosh Chodesh Sivan until the 13th of Sivan.
Best wishes,
