Where in the Bible Are There Prophecies About the Messiah?
Question
Where in the Bible are there prophecies about the Messiah?
Answer
Greetings,
The prophets have told us that with the coming of the Messiah, the world will change - a wolf will dwell with a lamb, people will no longer fight, everyone will know Hashem, there will be no more unusual deaths, there will be resurrection of the dead, and primarily, redemption and welfare for the Jewish people.
The prophet Jeremiah prophesies that the Messiah who will arrive will be a king who will rule over all of Israel and will bring justice and righteousness throughout the land (Chapter 23, verse 4): "Behold, days are coming, declares Hashem, when I will raise up for David a righteous sprout, and a king will reign, and will be wise, and will do justice and righteousness in the land." Jeremiah also prophesies that after the coming of the Messiah, there will no longer be any unbelievers in Hashem in the world, but all will know Hashem from the smallest to the greatest (Chapter 31, verse 33): "They will no longer teach each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying - 'Know Hashem,' for all will know me from the smallest to the greatest, declares Hashem."
Jeremiah prophesies that with the revelation of the Messiah and redemption, there will no longer be injustice in the world (Chapter 31, verse 28): "In those days they will no longer say - 'The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge,' for each man will die for his own sin. Every man who eats sour grapes will have his teeth set on edge." In the end of days, all will recognize that the Jewish people are the chosen people (Chapter 31, verse 32): "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares Hashem; I will put my Torah in their midst, and I will write it upon their hearts, and I will be their God, and they will be my people..."
Isaiah prophesies that with the coming of redemption (Chapter 11, verse 6): "The wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie down with the young goat." Daniel prophesies that with the coming of redemption, there will be resurrection of the dead (Chapter 12, verse 2): "And many from those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake." The Messiah will restore the kingdom of the house of David and renew our days like of old. The Rambam summarizes (Laws of Kings, Chapter 11): "The king Messiah will stand up, and return the kingdom of the house of David to its former government, and will build the Temple, and gather the exiles of Israel... As it is written, 'Then Hashem your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you; and He will gather you from all the nations... If your exile is at the end of the heavens, from there Hashem your God will gather you, and from there He will take you. And Hashem your God will bring you...'" (Deuteronomy 30:3)... If he has done and succeeded, and defeated all the nations around him, and built the Temple in its place, and gathered the exiles of Israel - then he is the Messiah for sure."
