Question

Is it permissible to wear new clothes during the Three Weeks?

Thank you

Answer

Greetings,

It is permissible to wear new clothes from the 17th of Tammuz until Rosh Chodesh Av. However, it is advisable to be careful not to wear significant garments on which one would recite the blessing of *Shehechiyanu* (see Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 561:17).

From Rosh Chodesh Av - according to Ashkenazi custom, it is prohibited to wear any new clothing, even if one does not recite *Shehechiyanu* on them (Rama there 561:6, and Mishnah Berurah 561:34). According to Sephardi custom, one should refrain only during the week that includes Tisha B'Av, but it is also correct for Sephardim to be stringent from Rosh Chodesh Av (Responsa Yechaveh Da'at, Part 1, Siman 37).

Blessings,

Hillel Meirs
