Tikkun Chatzot and Tikkun Rachel for Women

AA

Question

Hello! Does a woman need to recite Tikkun Chatzot or Tikkun Rachel?

Thank you, Hila.

Answer

Hello

It was asked by the Ben Ish Chai in his book Rav Pe'alim (Part 1 - Sod Yasharim Section 9) and I will quote a bit of his wording: "Question. Let our teacher teach us, women who know how to read the Tanakh, and pray every day the Eighteen Benedictions, is it proper for them to say every night Tikkun Rachel and Tikkun Leah, as the men say Tikkun Chatzot, or at least in the month of Elul, or perhaps women have no connection to Tikkun Chatzot. I was prompted to ask this question because I have not seen or heard that women say Tikkun Chatzot, and I did not know how to rule on it.

The truth is this: it has not been found nor heard that women recite Tikkun Chatzot, Tikkun Rachel or Tikkun Leah, even though they are wise and learned women, and their way is to study Tehillim every day, and they also have a set learning schedule, yet they do not say Tikkun Chatzot. ... And know that I asked our dear friend the righteous Rabbi Meir Meni z"l, to inform me if there are women in the Holy City who say Tikkun Chatzot, and he replied to me as follows: we have neither heard nor seen that a woman says Tikkun Chatzot, and the reason might be... Therefore, it seems that it is not proper for women to say Tikkun Chatzot, neither Tikkun Rachel nor Tikkun Leah. And see there that he elaborated on the reason for this in the secrets of Kabbalah.

Wishing you success – M"Y
