When Should One Recite the Traveler's Prayer?

AA

Question

Hello Rabbi, what are the conditions for reciting the Traveler's Prayer? And when should one bless without mentioning Hashem's name?

Thank you in advance

Answer

Greetings,

One should recite the Traveler's Prayer when traveling from city to city, provided that the journey is at least a distance of a "parasa." If the journey is shorter than this, the Traveler's Prayer can be recited without signing off with a blessing (Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 110:7).

According to the Sephardi custom, the distance of a "parasa" is measured by time, so if one is traveling for 72 minutes from city to city, one should recite the Traveler's Prayer (see Responsa Yabia Omer, part 1, Orach Chaim 13, and Kitzur Shulchan Aruch, Yalkut Yosef 110:2).

According to the Ashkenazi custom, the distance of a "parasa" is measured by distance; hence, if one is traveling 3.840 kilometers from city to city, one should recite the Traveler's Prayer (see Responsa Shevet Halevi, part 10, 21:2, and Hilchot Shlomo, part 1, chapter 21, paragraph 7).

Best regards,

Hillel Meir
