The Thirteen Attributes of Mercy: God’s Patience, and Our Responsibility

Rabbi Yitzchak Berkovits

The Thirteen Attributes of Mercy are not a shortcut around judgment, but a revelation of how deeply Hashem wants us to succeed. This piece explains how mercy flows from Hashem’s original desire to give — creating us, sustaining us even after failure, granting strength to repent, extending patience beyond reason, and never giving up on us. Yet the final attribute makes the purpose unmistakable: mercy does not erase responsibility. Hashem gives endlessly so that we can ultimately choose repentance, earn our growth, and fulfill the very purpose for which we were created.
