On Sukkot, the mitzvah to be happy takes on a special intensity. We are commanded to rejoice on all the holidays, but Sukkot is uniquely associated with simcha. At the same time, Sukkot gives us another mitzvah: to leave the comfort of our homes and sit in the sukkah. And sometimes, the sukkah is not exactly comfortable. It may be too hot, too cold, or simply less convenient than being inside. So if Hashem wants us to be especially happy on Sukkot, why does He ask us to sit in a temporary, less comfortable dwelling? Wouldn’t we be happier in the house? The answer reveals something much deeper about why we do the Mitzvot.
