I make sure to do it, because I want peace in my home.”
Rabbi Steinman smiled and said: “I have a better segulah for you. Roll up your sleeves a bit, and wash the dishes that were used on Shabbat.”
Rabbi Steinman was of course not only referring to washing dishes. He was teaching that peace in the home does not depend on segulot or rituals, but on simple, everyday actions. Helping at home, contributing, and showing consideration are what bring real peace. The secret of shalom bayit lies in small deeds that express genuine love and care.
Rabbi Steinman, who was known for his sensitivity and love for people, understood that it is the small actions of daily life that make the real difference. A simple act like washing dishes shows thoughtfulness and concern, and it can have a powerful effect on the atmosphere in the home. We often look for spiritual shortcuts and special remedies, but Rabbi Steinman reminded us that the true solutions are usually found in ordinary, everyday behavior.
Investing in Relationships
This wisdom can serve as a powerful example for us. It is not enough to observe mitzvot and rituals if we do not invest in our relationships and in our family members. Shalom bayit can be strengthened through simple acts of help, consideration, and love. Even when they seem trivial, these actions have the power to transform the home and bring calm and harmony.
Rabbi Steinman knew how to see beauty in simplicity and strength in small deeds. He understood that true greatness is not found in dramatic or impressive acts, but in the small details and daily behaviors that show love and consideration.
This message is especially relevant in the modern world, where we often look for quick and magical solutions to every problem. We frequently forget that the simplest solutions are often the most effective. Instead of searching for special rituals, we can begin with simple, everyday actions that express real love and care.
