Remains on the fortress in Nahariyain 2016, remains of a 3,400-year-old fortress were uncovered during construction work for a new residential tower and underground parking on Balfour Street in Nahariya.
The findings indicate that the city of Nahariya engaged in trade and cultural relations with Mediterranean countries. It appears that the uncovered fortress served as an administrative center for sailors who sailed along the Mediterranean coast 3,400 years ago. Alongside the fortress, there was likely a harbor, and numerous artifacts were found in its chambers, including clay figurines resembling humans and animals, bronze weapons, and imported pottery.
The fortress contained an abundance of grain, legumes, and grapes. These findings provide insights into the supplies purchased by seafarers.
The remains of the fortress was integrated into the residential tower itself, in the building's basement level, allowing for the preservation of the ancient site.
This project stands as a striking example of modern development seamlessly blending with Israel’s ancient history.
