 The Content Of The Song

The Song of the Sea is the song composed through Divine Inspiration by Moses and the Children of Israel following the great miracle of the splitting of the Red Sea – when the sea parted for the Children of Israel who passed through it and subsequently all the Egyptians drowned in it. The song appears in the Torah in Exodus, Chapter 15. The content of the song is primarily thanksgiving for this overt and immense miracle, followed by prophecy through Divine Inspiration and prayer regarding the period of entering the Land, the building of the Holy Temple, the destruction of Amalek, and the coming of the complete Redemption.

How Is The Song Of The Sea Written?

The song is written in the Torah scroll in a unique poetic form, referred to by our Sages as "a half-brick over a whole brick." In this manner, every line contains one or two spaces between the segments, while in the line below – the words are written beneath the space, and a space is placed beneath the words.

When Is The Song Of The Sea Said?

The song is recited daily during the Morning Prayer at the end of Pesukei D'Zimra. Our Rabbis throughout the generations note that saying the Song of the Sea every day with intent and joy, while visualizing the great wonder that occurred during the splitting of the Red Sea - constitutes an immense Segulah. The Song of the Sea is read publicly twice a year: on the Sabbath of Parashat Beshalach, which occurs near Tu B'Shvat, and on the seventh day of Passover. Among various communities, there are customs of reciting the song on the night of the seventh day of Passover, in a large assembly.

According to the custom of the Vilna Gaon, the Song of the Sea is recited during the Morning Prayer of the seventh day of Passover verse by verse, by the Cantor and the congregation together.

The Song Of The Sea According To Kabbalah

It is brought in the Holy Zohar, Parashat Beshalach 220: "Anyone who says the Song of the Sea every day and focuses upon it, will merit to say it in the World to Come, to praise with it in the days of King Messiah during the joy of the Assembly of Israel with the Holy One, Blessed be He. And a person who does so, the Holy One, Blessed be He, forgives him for all his sins and saves him from all troubles that come to the world." The Zohar emphasizes that "we should say it every day with great joy like the first hour we said it, for certainly the power of its Segulah every day is like that first hour." This means that when the song is said with joy, an abundance of Segulah is influenced upon us from Heaven like that first hour. The Mishnah Berurah consequently ruled as law: "And one should say the Song of the Sea with joy, and imagine in his mind as if on that very day he crossed the sea, and he who says it with joy is forgiven for his sins." The Kabbalist Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropoli wrote in his book "Shemesh U'Magen" that "at any time and any moment that a person highlights the Exodus from Egypt with his speech and takes action to drive away the enemy from before him, he nullifies all difficult and evil decrees upon himself, and the forces of impurity are humbled while the forces of holiness prevail. And mentioning the miracles of the Exodus from Egypt is an excellent protection for times of trouble." In the book "Yimalet Nafsho," it is brought that the praise of the virtue of saying the song is because the song constitutes faithful testimony to the publication of the truth of the Creator's existence and greatness, as it is said: "And Egypt shall know that I am the Lord" (Exodus 14:4) because the peak of the Creator's revelation was at the splitting of the Red Sea; this was the arena of the greatest and unique divine miracles and revelations among all future events from then until the complete Redemption. In the Kabbalistic book "Tziporen Shamir," it is brought that "one of ten Segulot that atone for a person's sins without affliction or torment is one who reads the Song of the Sea with joy and melody. And it contains eighteen mentions of the Name of Hashem, a hint to the influence of vitality and protection." The author of the 'Charedim' quotes the Yalkut Shimoni on the verse: "And Moses led [Israel] onward" – "that he led them away from their sins, for their sins were forgiven through the song. For anyone for whom a miracle is performed and says a song – is forgiven for all his sins."
