Passover Cleaning, Without the Meltdown

Feeling overwhelmed by Passover prep? Here are calm, no-drama tips to clean smarter and actually enjoy the lead-up to the holiday.

Whether it's big or small, simple or meticulously designed, there's no place like home. When we tackle cleaning and organizing, for Passover and all year long, we should do it with the mindset that we want to live in a clean, comfortable, and orderly home. But especially at this time of year, the work becomes demanding and stressful, and we feel like we don't get anything done. Here are some tips to help you clean your home calmly and efficiently:

Make a smart game plan

Plan ahead which rooms you'll clean each day over the next two weeks. Make a clear list and decide in advance which tasks you'll complete each day—dusting, window cleaning, vacuuming carpets, washing dishes, etc. Each time you finish a task, check it off with a V and move on to the next one. It will organize your thoughts and, magically, help you relax.

Use quality cleaning products

Good products can streamline and simplify the process and save precious time. Also make sure you have enough supplies on hand: scrub sponges, soft cloths, paper towels, specialty brushes, and targeted sprays (like degreasers, bleach, bathroom cleaner, etc.). Get everything ready in advance. Nothing's more frustrating than running out of supplies when you're finally ready to clean.

Put things back where they belong

Make sure everything in your home has a designated spot. If you cleaned your Passover pots and have nowhere to put them, it creates clutter—and a lot of stress. Don't start cleaning until you've cleared space in advance and decided what goes where. You'll work much faster and more efficiently that way.

Turn on some music

Cleaning doesn't have to be stressful. It can actually be fun if you set a positive, relaxing vibe. Put on music in the background or in your headphones—something that calms you or, on the flip side, fills you with energy. Time will pass faster and the whole thing will feel a lot more enjoyable.

Delegate wisely

The job doesn't have to fall on one person. If you have kids, enlist them. Give them tasks that fit their abilities—tidying their own room or helping clean the kitchen cabinets. They'll feel good about being a meaningful part of the household and learn important life skills along the way.

This isn't a race

Don't expect to do everything at lightning speed. This isn't a competition, and with efficient planning you'll have plenty of time to clean and organize before the holiday. A successful deep clean takes time and effort. Even if you spend longer in one room, don't stress. It's better to be thorough than to redo things later because they weren't done properly.

Take breaks

Give yourself a breather between tasks. You don't have to clean and organize from morning till night. In between, sit for a moment, sip some tea, or have something sweet. Breaks are essential in any kind of work and will help you relax and handle the cleaning more calmly.

One thing to remember

Cleaning the house of leavened foods and getting your home ready for Passover doesn't necessarily mean organizing every closet, dusting every surface, and redesigning your space. Sure, people use this season for a refresh, but the actual requirement is to remove leavened foods from the home, kosher your kitchenware, etc., and sometimes we need to remind ourselves of that. Home styling is nice, organizing closets can feel liberating, but if you don't get to it, you can always do it after the holiday.
