Romania, a gem of Eastern Europe, is known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich traditions. Yet beyond its mountains and villages lies a remarkable natural wonder that has fascinated visitors and scientists alike.

In the quiet town of Costesti, north of Bucharest, an unusual geological phenomenon draws the attention of geologists and tourists from around the world. Here, scattered across the landscape, are strange stones known as trovants, often called "living rocks."

These formations are not only visually striking. They appear almost alive, slowly changing in ways that make them seem to grow and even move over time.

What Are Trovants

Trovants have long intrigued researchers and have been the subject of numerous studies. Although several explanations have been proposed, scientists generally agree that trovants are sandstone concretions with hard outer layers of compacted sand.

These concretions are denser than the surrounding rock. As softer material erodes over time, the trovants gradually emerge from the ground, becoming more visible with the passing years.

Their rounded shapes and unusual textures give them an almost sculpted appearance, adding to their mysterious reputation.

Why the Rocks Appear to Grow

One of the most fascinating aspects of trovants is their apparent growth.

When rainwater seeps into the rocks, it interacts with the minerals inside the concretions. This process can cause mineral-rich material to push outward, creating the impression that the rocks are expanding.

In some cases, chemical reactions produce small rounded formations that resemble bubbles or new growths on the surface of the stone. These formations reinforce the impression that the rocks are alive.

In reality, this is part of an extremely slow geological process that unfolds over hundreds of years. The changes occur so gradually that it is impossible to observe the growth directly or capture it through time lapse photography.

Even so, the trovants of Costesti remain one of nature’s most intriguing illusions, stones that seem to blur the line between the living and the inanimate.
