As Pesach approaches, many of us throw ourselves into cleaning the house as thoroughly as possible. The goal is not only to remove every trace of chametz, but also, if we are honest, to make the entire home shine and smell fresh. Cabinets are emptied, surfaces are scrubbed, and every corner is carefully checked.

Still, even in the intense Pesach cleaning rush, it is worth remembering that not every task requires strong chemical cleaners. Many areas of the home can be cleaned effectively using simple, natural ingredients that are already found in most kitchens.

Natural Cleaning Products You Can Use

Instead of relying on heavy chemical products, you can clean large parts of the home using simple household items. The products you will need include:

  • lemon juice
  • vinegar
  • liquid soap
  • tea tree oil
  • club soda
  • baking soda
  • hydrogen peroxide
  • salt
  • dishwasher detergent

Removing Grease and Stubborn Marks

Lemon juice or vinegar works very well for removing stubborn streaks and grease marks from many surfaces. Apply the liquid and scrub thoroughly with a scouring pad until the surface is clean.

A Natural Disinfectant

You can prepare a simple disinfectant by mixing two cups of water with three tablespoons of liquid soap and about ten drops of tea tree oil. This mixture creates a strong disinfecting solution while avoiding the harsh fumes often associated with bleach.

Cleaning Windows

Windows can be cleaned with an easy homemade solution. Mix one liter of water with two tablespoons of white vinegar and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray the window lightly and wipe it dry with a clean cloth or even with newspaper for a streak free shine.

Removing Stains from Carpets and Fabrics

Carpet and fabric stains can often be treated using baking soda. Dip a damp cloth into a bowl of baking soda and gently rub the stained area. This simple method can help lift many common stains.

Cleaning Bathroom Surfaces

Bathroom surfaces can also be cleaned with baking soda. Sprinkle baking soda on the surface and scrub with a damp cloth or scouring pad. If stubborn stains remain, scatter a little table salt or coarse salt over the area, wait about two minutes, and scrub again. In many cases the stains will disappear.

Removing Mold

Mold in the bathroom can be treated with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water at a ratio of one part hydrogen peroxide to two parts water. Spray the mixture onto the mold, wait about an hour, and then rinse the area thoroughly with lukewarm water.

A Cleaner Home Without Harsh Chemicals

Preparing the home for Pesach does not always require strong chemical cleaners. Often, simple and natural ingredients can do the job just as effectively while creating a safer and fresher environment in the home. With a bit of creativity and patience, you can achieve a sparkling Pesach clean while keeping your home both healthy and welcoming for the holiday.
