A man rammed a vehicle into a synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday, driving through the building’s entrance and down a hallway before being confronted by armed security guards, authorities said. The suspect was later found dead inside the vehicle after the confrontation. One security guard was injured after being struck by the vehicle and taken to a hospital, authorities said, though he was expected to recover.

The incident at Temple Israel quickly triggered alarm among Jewish communities and security alerts at Jewish institutions, as officials began investigating the attack and its potential motives.

According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the suspect drove a truck through the synagogue’s doors and into the building. “He breached the building, drove down the hall and he was engaged by security,” Bouchard said.

Security personnel opened fire during the confrontation. Investigators initially said it was unclear whether the suspect was killed by gunfire or died as a result of the fire that broke out inside the vehicle.

The truck caught fire in the synagogue hallway, filling the area with smoke and forcing first responders to enter the building wearing gas masks. Bouchard said investigators were sweeping the vehicle for potential explosives. “We’re through an abundance of caution clearing the vehicle for IEDs or any explosives,” he said. Reports later indicated that explosive materials were discovered inside the vehicle, though authorities have not yet provided detailed confirmation about the nature of those materials.

The attack prompted a large law enforcement response, with nearly 200 police and sheriff vehicles lining the road leading to the synagogue. Agents from the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Michigan State Police joined the investigation, while bomb squads and explosive-detection dogs were deployed to examine the scene.

“FBI personnel are on the scene with partners in Michigan and responding to the apparent vehicle ramming and active shooter situation,” FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement.

Authorities said it was too early to determine a motive for the attack and that the investigation remains ongoing.

NBC News reported that the suspect was identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, 36, who had previously been convicted of aiding the Islamic State and was recently released from prison. Officials have not yet confirmed those details publicly as part of the investigation.

Jewish organizations responded quickly to the incident. The Jewish Federation of Detroit issued a “lockout protocol” advisory instructing Jewish institutions to restrict entry and secure their buildings while authorities responded to the attack. The Jewish Federations of North America described the incident as “this antisemitic terrorist attack.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said the attack was “heartbreaking,” adding that “Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also condemned the incident, writing that “The attack on Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan is horrifying.” He said the New York Police Department would deploy “high-visibility patrols” around Jewish religious and cultural institutions across the city as authorities across the country increased security following the attack.

Temple Israel had armed security guards in place at the time of the incident, a measure that officials and community leaders said likely prevented more serious casualties. The guards confronted the suspect shortly after he drove into the building, stopping the attack before anyone inside the synagogue was seriously injured.

Michigan State Representative Noah Arbit, who represents the area and is also a member of the synagogue, said security preparations were an ongoing concern for congregants. “I would be lying if I hadn’t thought about how I would respond and what it would be like if this happened at Temple Israel,” he said.

Authorities continue to investigate the attack and the suspect’s background as the Jewish community in Michigan and across the United States assesses the security implications of the incident.
