Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky was an American engineer of Russian origin. He was born in Kyiv, today the capital of Ukraine. As a child, his mother often told him about the remarkable attempts of the Italian genius Leonardo da Vinci to build a flying machine. These stories captured young Igor’s imagination, and he resolved that one day he would realize Da Vinci’s dream.
By the age of twelve he had already built a model helicopter powered by rubber bands that successfully lifted into the air. Shortly before turning twenty he traveled to Paris, where he devoted himself to the study of aviation. In 1909 he completed his first helicopter, but it stubbornly refused to leave the ground. Undeterred, he continued experimenting until he managed to build a model that stayed in the air for twelve seconds.
Again and again he tried, countless times. More often than not, his attempts ended in failure. The machine would collapse, and the engine would break. Yet despite these disappointments, Sikorsky never abandoned his dream of building a flying machine. At times he worked on helicopters, at other times on single engine airplanes, and later even on multi engine aircraft. For a period he assembled airplane parts in a chicken farm on Long Island, purchasing or collecting components from scrap yards.
Only after thirty years of determined effort did his dream finally take shape. His helicopter eventually succeeded in taking flight. It was refined and improved repeatedly until it became the aircraft used today by military and police forces across the world. Today, when people say “helicopter,” they often think of Sikorsky.
His place in history was earned through perseverance and an unwavering belief that he could achieve what once seemed impossible.
Sikorsky is only one example among many well known individuals whose success was built on determination and a refusal to surrender to despair. We admire their accomplishments, yet we often overlook the difficult path that led them there. With a little reflection, it becomes clear that their journeys were filled with moments of discouragement. Their success came because they stood firm in pursuit of their goals and resisted the pull of despair.
Learning From Our Own Experiences
Each of us can recall moments when we achieved something meaningful simply because we refused to give up. At the same time, we can also remember occasions when we failed to realize our potential because we lacked the patience to persist.
We wanted immediate results, and when those results did not appear quickly, we became discouraged and abandoned the effort. In doing so, we often lost opportunities that may have eventually borne fruit.
Life is filled with obstacles and setbacks. When repeated attempts fail, the spark of hope can begin to fade. Gradually, despair may take hold, preventing us from making further efforts that might have led to success.
The stronger our desire for something, the deeper the disappointment we feel when we fail to attain it. At times we may lose motivation to begin the day, or activities that once felt meaningful suddenly seem empty.
Many opportunities are lost simply because despair prevents us from fully utilizing our abilities. Over time, repeated disappointments may lead to a broader sense of hopelessness about ourselves and our lives. Our self esteem diminishes, our productivity declines, and we are left with a lingering sense of dissatisfaction.
How can we confront this? How can we escape the trap of despair when things do not go as planned despite our sincere efforts?
The following insights may offer guidance during difficult moments.
Learning From the Past
When we face challenges that threaten to overwhelm us, it is important to recognize the internal forces at work within us.
On one side stands the positive voice within us, reminding us that calm follows the storm and that perseverance can bring deep satisfaction.
On the other, stands the voice of discouragement. It reminds us that beginnings are difficult and attempts to convince us that we have already faced this situation before and failed. It presents past disappointments as proof that future attempts will also end in failure. What it conveniently forgets to mention is that this same voice of discouragement often played a role in our earlier defeat.
If we strengthen our determination and nurture hope within ourselves, the positive voice can prevail and we may discover that what once seemed impossible is within reach. Often we find that the challenge was not as frightening as we imagined.
Days of Joy and Days of Struggle
In the course of life there are days when everything seems to go well, and the world appears bright and welcoming. From the moment we wake up, things seem to fall into place. People are kind, tasks succeed, and problems resolve themselves.
But there are also days when everything seems to go wrong. We wake up tired, encounter irritating people, and face unexpected difficulties. Financial concerns appear at inconvenient moments, plans are delayed, and even projects intended to improve our lives suddenly stall.
On such days we are confronted with the reality of life and with our own ability to endure challenges while preserving our emotional balance. At these moments despair can begin to creep in and darken our outlook. This is precisely when we must remind ourselves that despair is never the final word.
Difficult days pass. Just as they arrive, they also fade. Remembering this can give us the strength to endure them.
Challenging days can also remind us that we are human and not all powerful. They encourage us to strengthen our faith and recognize that life is guided by forces greater than ourselves. When we understand that even difficult moments have meaning, we gain the resilience needed to overcome them.
The Importance of Self Encouragement
One of the most effective ways to resist despair is through self encouragement.
When we recognize our efforts and acknowledge even small successes, hope gradually returns. Reflecting on the achievements of our past, particularly those that required perseverance and courage, reminds us that we are capable of overcoming obstacles once again.
This awareness can provide the strength needed to continue moving forward even during moments of uncertainty.
Determination: The Secret of Hope
Human beings aspire to accomplish many things, yet they often abandon their goals too quickly. They forget that meaningful achievements require patience and determination.
The greater our determination to reach a goal, the greater our chances of success.
A remarkable example illustrates this truth. A Korean man named Sun Sang Moon, who was illiterate, attempted to pass the written driving test an astonishing 271 times and failed each time. Yet he refused to give up. Over the course of five years he continued trying again and again. Finally, on his 272nd attempt, he succeeded.
When asked how he felt, he replied, “I am very happy to know that after all my efforts I finally succeeded. I feel much more confident in myself now.”
Despite his limited education, he believed in himself and remained determined. He set a goal and pursued it relentlessly, even when success seemed unlikely.
We too can set meaningful goals and pursue them with determination. In the best case we will achieve them. In other cases we may still reach valuable milestones that move us closer to the path meant for us.
As long as we continue moving forward instead of surrendering to despair, our efforts will eventually yield results.
Believing in the Ability to Repair the Past
Another essential step is believing in our ability to repair past mistakes.
We often look back at our failures and allow regret to dominate our thoughts. When we dwell on these memories, despair and sadness can easily take hold, and the emotional weight can prevent us from moving forward.
Instead, we must restore hope by recognizing that mistakes are part of growth. They do not define our future. Progress becomes possible when we learn from the past while continuing to move forward.
When Despair Becomes an Excuse
At times despair can become comfortable. We convince ourselves, with seemingly logical explanations, that giving up is the only realistic choice. Yet honest reflection often reveals that despair can serve as an excuse for inaction.
When the effort required to achieve a goal appears overwhelming, we may abandon it prematurely, often due to lack of confidence or simple reluctance to face the challenge. In such situations despair disguises itself as rational judgment.
The most effective way to overcome this tendency is to examine the true source of the despair. Once we identify the underlying cause, we can respond with renewed determination and encouragement.
When we do so, the temporary difficulties of the present will pass, while the lasting rewards of perseverance will remain in our hands.
