The IDF confirmed today that Israel eliminated Iran’s Intelligence Minister Ismail Khatib in a precise overnight airstrike in Tehran, marking one of the most senior Iranian officials killed since the start of the conflict between Israel and Iran.

The assassination comes a day after Israel issued a new directive allowing the IDF to eliminate senior Iranian or Hezbollah officials immediately when reliable intelligence and an operational opportunity emerge, without waiting for additional approval from the political leadership. Israeli officials say the move is designed to prevent missed opportunities against high-value targets.

Khatib, appointed intelligence minister in 2021 by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, oversaw Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence, one of the regime’s central intelligence and repression bodies. The ministry operates a global network responsible for surveillance, espionage, and covert activity, including operations targeting Israeli and American interests.

As intelligence minister, Khatib played a significant role in directing arrests and killings of protesters during waves of internal unrest in Iran. Israeli officials say his ministry coordinated intelligence assessments during anti-government demonstrations and was heavily involved in suppressing the nationwide protests that erupted during the 2022–2023 hijab demonstrations.

The ministry also led intelligence and terror operations targeting Israeli interests abroad and within Israel during the current war with Iran. Khatib previously served in senior positions tied to the IRGC, particularly in intelligence roles, making him a central figure in the regime’s security structure.

Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the elimination during a special security assessment Wednesday morning at the military headquarters in Tel Aviv. “The intensity of the strikes in Iran is increasing. We are in the midst of the decisive phase,” Katz said. “No one in Iran has immunity. Everyone is on the target list.”

The defense minister added that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and he had granted the military standing authorization to carry out targeted eliminations whenever intelligence and operational conditions allow. “The prime minister and I authorized the IDF to eliminate any Iranian official once an intelligence and operational opportunity is confirmed, without needing additional approval.”

Israeli officials say the directive significantly shortens the chain of command for high-value operations, allowing commanders to act quickly when intelligence identifies senior figures.

The killing of Khatib follows a series of high-profile eliminations inside Iran in recent days. Yesterday, Israel confirmed the assassination of Ali Larijani, a central figure in Iran’s leadership structure, along with Basij commander Gholam Reza Soleimani.

Separately, Israeli officials said an overnight strike in Beirut eliminated the commander of the Iranian-backed Imam Hussein militia, a force that assists Hezbollah and operates in several regional arenas.

“Significant surprises are expected across all arenas that will escalate the war we are fighting against Iran and Hezbollah,” Katz warned.

The killing of Khatib adds another senior figure to the growing list of Iranian officials eliminated during the conflict, as Israel signals that its strategy now focuses on dismantling the leadership networks directing Iran’s military, intelligence, and proxy forces across the Middle East.
