UK says suspected Iranian spies tried to breach nuclear sub base in Scotland

A man and a woman were arrested after allegedly trying to drive into a Scottish base that houses the UK's nuclear submarines. MI5 has recently disrupted several Iran-linked plots, including charges tied to surveillance of Jewish sites in London.

British security officials arrested two people suspected of spying for Iran, British media reported Sunday. According to the reports, a man and a woman were detained a few days ago after they tried to enter a British military base in Scotland that houses nuclear submarines. According to the Sun, the man is an Iranian citizen, while the woman's nationality is unknown.

British police said the two suspects, a 34-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, tried to enter by car the base that serves as the home port for the UK's nuclear-submarine fleet and its attack submarines.

Britain's intelligence agency, MI5, has foiled multiple attempts over the past year by Iranian operatives to act inside the UK. In the most recent case handled, last week charges were filed against two men accused of surveilling Jewish sites in London under Iranian direction.

The two, Nematollah Shashbani, 40, and Alireza Parsati, 22, tracked, among other locations, Israel's embassy in London, the city's Jewish community center, and the oldest synagogue in Britain. They were arrested earlier this month, after the start of the war with Iran.
