A recent article reviewed common parenting mistakes and offered five tips to help avoid them. Following are some of the key points:
Overusing rewards:
Focusing too much on giving rewards for every good behavior can lead children to depend on external incentives in order to behave properly. It is better to teach the child the internal value of good behavior and to reinforce it in ways that do not always involve material rewards.
Excessive or inappropriate punishment:
Harsh punishment or punishment that does not fit the situation can harm the parent child relationship and weaken the child’s understanding of what is being taught. Discipline should be measured and appropriate to the child’s actions in order to be effective.
Setting expectations that are too high:
Expectations that do not match the child’s abilities can lead to feelings of failure and damage self confidence. It is important to set realistic goals that fit the child’s age and abilities, and to support them in achieving those goals.
Ignoring the child’s emotional needs:
Overlooking emotional needs such as fears, anxieties, or other feelings can lead to emotional and psychological difficulties later on. It is important to listen, understand, and provide emotional support.
Lack of consistency:
When parents are not consistent with rules and consequences, children struggle to understand boundaries and expectations. Inconsistency creates confusion and can lead to negative behavior or attempts to take advantage of the situation.
