Jewish Community (Facebook)An attempted arson attack targeted a Jewish community building and synagogue in Skopje, North Macedonia, early Sunday morning, according to local authorities and community leaders. No injuries were reported in the available coverage.
Israeli Ambassador to North Macedonia Vivian Aisen described it as “a deeply disturbing anti-Semitic incident… the first since 1945,” warning that it strikes at the foundations of coexistence in the country.
According to local reports, two individuals were seen entering the courtyard of the Jewish facility, spraying a flammable liquid near the entrance, and igniting it. Police later said officers responding to the scene found a fuel canister and traces of burning in the area.
Authorities confirmed that an investigation is underway. “Immediately after receiving the report, police officers went to the scene and measures are being taken to clarify the case,” police said in a statement. No arrests have been publicly confirmed.
The Jewish community in North Macedonia strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an assault not only on a religious site but on broader societal values. “On April 12, for the first time in recent history, an attempt was made to set fire to the Jewish community building and synagogue. This act is not just an attack on a religious building, but a deeply disturbing blow to the fundamental values of a civilized society - coexistence, dignity and mutual respect,” the community said in a statement attributed to its leadership.
Community leaders also warned that the incident reflects a wider trend. “We note with particular concern that in recent years there has been an increase in cases of hate speech, intolerance and a dangerous identification of Jews with complex geopolitical developments in the Middle East,” the statement said. “Such tendencies are not only wrong, but also deeply unjust, and pave the way for the revival of anti-Semitism.”
The Jewish community, one of the smallest in the country, emphasized its long-standing integration in Macedonian society. “We have lived separately in our religious traditions, but together in everyday life - side by side with all our fellow citizens, sharing both the joys and sorrows of this society,” the statement said.
Leaders called for a unified response from authorities and the public. “We strongly and unequivocally condemn this act. At the same time, we call for a clear, loud and unified condemnation by all religious leaders, institutions and citizens,” the statement said, urging vigilance against rising hatred.
“We appeal to the competent authorities to fully clarify the case and consistently apply the laws. But more importantly, we appeal to the conscience of society - not to allow hatred, fear and ignorance to become louder than reason, humanity and justice,” the statement concluded.
Police have not yet released further details about the suspects, and the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine responsibility and motive.
