In the photo: Ella Abuksis, HY"DElla Abuksis hy"d was born and raised in Sderot, the middle child in a close and devoted family. She grew up alongside her siblings, Shlomit, Ran, Keren, and Tamir Yaakov, surrounded by values of faith, respect, and responsibility.
From a young age, Ella stood out for her character. She honored her parents deeply, showed respect to her teachers and rabbis, and carried herself with quiet dignity. Her modesty and conduct were something others could look up to.
A Life Guided by Values
One of the qualities that defined Ella was her care in how she spoke. The practice of guarding one’s speech was central to her daily life, and she was known for being especially mindful in this area.
Alongside this, she was deeply committed to acts of kindness. Giving to others, helping those around her, and being attentive to people’s needs were not occasional actions, but part of who she was.
Her younger brother, Tamir Yaakov, held a special place in her heart. From the day he was born, she felt a sense of responsibility toward him and looked after him with care and love.
A Moment of Courage
On the evening of January 15, 2005, Ella returned home to Sderot after Shabbat. As she walked with her younger brother, a siren suddenly sounded, warning of an incoming rocket.
In that instant, Ella did not hesitate.
She embraced her brother, shielding him with her body.
The rocket exploded nearby. Tamir Yaakov was lightly injured, but Ella, who had protected him, was critically wounded.
A Nation Prays
Ella was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. For an entire week, prayers were said across Israel and around the world, as people hoped for her recovery.
But on Friday, January 21, 2005, Ella passed away.
She was just seventeen and a half years old.
A Legacy That Lives On
Ella left behind her parents, two sisters, and two brothers, along with a community that mourned her deeply. She was laid to rest in Sderot, the city where she had grown up and lived her life.
In their eulogy, her parents expressed both their pain and their pride. They spoke of a daughter who, in her short life, achieved what many do not accomplish in many years.
They found comfort in the knowledge that her legacy would continue, through the values she lived by, the kindness she spread, and the example she set for others.
Ella Abuksis hy"d did not live a long life, but she lived a meaningful one. In her final act, she reflected the same care, love, and selflessness that had guided her every day.
