A prison term and a hefty fine were handed down to Mahmoud Sheikh Khalil, a resident of Ar'ara, after he was convicted of insulting religion and causing a fire through negligence. The incident unfolded late at night on Derech Eretz Street in Harish, where the defendant began setting a fire using an accelerant and a lighter. Fortunately, the flames, which were later extinguished, did not spread to the nearby shops.
The turning point came when the defendant spotted a tefillin stand at the site, which contained holy books, tallitot, and charity boxes. According to the verdict, he approached the stand, crudely desecrated the area, rummaged through the sacred items, and tore pages from Torah and other holy books. He also physically damaged the ritual items by ripping the tefillin straps from the tefillin boxes and throwing them on the floor. He did not stop there; he took three charity boxes, crushed them, and stole cash from them.
During these acts, the defendant expressed intense hatred toward Jews in front of a friend who was present. Judge Alex Akhter wrote in his decision that these were \"worthy of all condemnation\" and directly violated the right to religious worship and human dignity. The court underscored the heightened severity of the offenses given the country’s sensitive moment, about two months after the war began.
Despite the defendant’s young age and lack of a criminal record, the Probation Service declined to recommend treatment because he did not cooperate with the professionals. In the end, the court sentenced him to 10 months in prison, a suspended sentence, and a fine of 10,000 shekels.
