Gaza Strip (Photo: Abed Rahim Khatib, Flash90)The military prosecution today (Tuesday) filed three additional indictments against four defendants on serious charges of smuggling goods into the Gaza Strip. The indictments were submitted following joint investigations by the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), the Military Police Criminal Investigation Division, the Tax Authority, and additional units.
In a joint statement, the authorities said that "the IDF and Shin Bet view the phenomenon of smuggling into the Gaza Strip with great severity, as it poses a risk to national security in general, and all the more so in cases involving IDF personnel in regular service or the reserves", and clarified that enforcement bodies "will continue to investigate such incidents and bring those involved to justice".
According to the first indictment, two defendants - an officer with the rank of captain and a soldier with the rank of sergeant - acted together with a noncommissioned officer holding the rank of master sergeant to smuggle cigarettes on a large scale between February and May 2024. After the officer joined the operation, the method expanded, and over the course of months approximately 250 cartons were smuggled at a frequency of two to three times per week. The total profit from the activity is estimated at about 6.5 to 7 million shekels. The two were already convicted in March 2026 in a separate case and demoted to the rank of private, and they now stand trial for additional offenses that were uncovered.
The second indictment describes the actions of a reservist at the rank of corporal, who worked with an NCO from the same unit to smuggle cigarettes and nicotine canisters in several incidents. According to the indictment, at least eight smuggling runs yielded him profits of approximately 650,000 to 700,000 shekels.
In the third indictment, another officer with the rank of captain, who served as a company commander, is accused of initiating smuggling together with an NCO under his direct command. According to the allegations, the two smuggled cigarettes, a motorcycle, and a cellphone on three separate occasions, from which the officer netted an estimated 900,000 to 1.1 million shekels.
In addition, the officer is charged with fraud and breach of trust. According to the indictment, he helped remove a civilian from the Strip after the smuggling of a truckload of goods, creating false pretenses and concealing details of the incident, and even instructed the person "to act as if the incident had not happened", without reporting it.
Meanwhile, the detention of two NCOs holding the rank of master sergeant was extended to allow continued proceedings and investigation, and a gag order has been imposed on their names and identifying details.
