More than a decade after an emergency birth nearly ended in tragedy, the MDA team that fought to save baby Shmuel Kovchik’s life reunited with him again, this time for a joyful celebration marking his bar mitzvah.

The emotional reunion took place years after the dramatic events of September 11, 2010, when MDA teams were rushed to a home birth in Kfar Chabad after complications suddenly developed during labor.

A Life Threatening Birth

Shortly after arriving at the home, the MDA team realized the situation was far more serious than a routine delivery. The newborn baby was delivered unconscious, without a pulse, and not breathing.

Additional emergency teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.

An MDA mobile intensive care unit soon arrived, led by paramedic Itcho Leibowitz together with paramedic trainee Mirit Halfon and medics Shneor Tsik and Oren Roni. The team quickly began intensive resuscitation efforts in an attempt to save the baby’s life.

For long and terrifying minutes, the team worked continuously to revive the newborn.

Then came the moment everyone had prayed for.

After approximately ten minutes of CPR and emergency treatment, the baby’s heart began beating again. He was stabilized, placed on ventilation support, and rushed to the hospital while the MDA team continued praying for his recovery.

From a Brit Milah to a Bar Mitzvah

In the months following the dramatic rescue, Shmuel’s condition steadily improved. The grateful family later invited the MDA team to attend his brit milah, celebrating the baby whose survival they had helped make possible.

Years later, the connection between the family and the emergency responders remained strong.

When Shmuel celebrated his bar mitzvah, the family once again invited the MDA team who had stood beside them during the most frightening moments of their lives.

“We went through a traumatic and difficult experience that, with Hashem’s help, ended in an open miracle,” said Shmuel’s father, Shneor Kovchik. “Since then, we have stayed in touch with the MDA team. We remember them every birthday, and it was obvious to us that we would invite them to celebrate Shmuel’s bar mitzvah as well.”

“The Angels in White”

The reunion was deeply emotional for the family.

“We were so moved to see the angels in white again,” the father shared. “But this time they came smiling, relaxed, and without medical equipment. I thank Hashem and MDA for saving our child’s life.”

He added that he hopes to continue celebrating future family milestones together with the team.

A Rescue Never Forgotten

For paramedic Itcho Leibowitz, the experience remains unforgettable even years later.

“It was the first time in my career that I performed CPR on a baby only minutes after birth,” he recalled. “It was an incredibly difficult moment.”

At the time, he said, the only thing on his mind was doing everything possible to save the newborn’s life.

Today, however, those painful memories are connected with something far more joyful.

“I’m deeply moved to return to Kfar Chabad years later, this time not in an intensive care unit, but to celebrate Shmuel’s bar mitzvah together with his family,” Leibowitz said. “I wish him many happy and healthy years ahead.”

A Full Circle Moment

The story of Shmuel Kovchik is a moving reminder of the extraordinary work performed by emergency responders every day, and of the deep bonds that can form during life’s most difficult moments.

What began as a desperate fight to save a newborn baby ended years later with smiles, gratitude, and a family celebrating the child whose life had once hung in the balance.
