Russian 'Shadow Fleet' Freighter Sank Off Spain — It Was Reportedly Carrying Parts for North Korea's Nuclear Reactors

CNN says the "Great Bear," a Russian cargo ship that went down in the Mediterranean on December 23, 2024, was moving components for two nuclear reactors bound for North Korea. Fourteen crew members were rescued; investigators say a "Western power" may have fired a torpedo. The ship's operator denies it, calling the incident a "terrorist attack."

CNN reported today (Tuesday) that the Russian cargo ship "Great Bear," part of Russia's military "shadow fleet," which sank under mysterious circumstances in the Mediterranean on December 23, 2024, was carrying parts for two nuclear reactors intended for North Korea.

The ship sank near the coast of Spain after a series of explosions on board. Most of the crew were killed, with 14 rescued by vessels sailing in the area.

According to today's report, although the vessel is registered as transporting port cranes and containers, the captain allegedly told investigators they were moving components for two undersea nuclear reactors. Investigators from Spain's military noted that the ship may have been attacked by a torpedo fired by a "Western power" to stop the transfer of the technology.

Investigators said they found discrepancies in the cargo manifest and examined the ship's route, suspecting it aided Kim Jong Un's regime in exchange for military assistance in the war in Ukraine. The vessel's registered operator, the Russian company Oboronlogistics, claimed it was carrying civilian equipment and called the incident a "terrorist attack."
