Shavuot is one of the most delicious holidays of the year, and for many people, it is the ultimate excuse to go all out with rich and comforting dairy dishes.

But let’s be honest: after years of cheesecakes, lasagnas, and standard casseroles, it can start to feel like we’ve seen it all before.

Still, every year there are a few creative cooks who manage to reinvent classic dairy dishes with fresh ideas and surprising twists that actually work.

I’ve always loved experimenting in the kitchen. I get bored quickly with the usual recipes, so I’m constantly looking for new combinations, textures, and flavors. These three Shavuot bakes came out of that creativity, and honestly, they surprised me in the best way.

If you enjoy trying something a little different, these recipes are for you.

Spaghetti and Cheese Bake With an Extra Crispy Topping

The twist: Instead of a standard cheesy top, this bake gets an ultra crispy layer made with buttery panko breadcrumbs.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of spaghetti, cooked very soft
  • 9 oz Bulgarian feta cheese, crumbled
  • 7 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a large bowl, mix the cooked spaghetti with the feta cheese, mozzarella, cottage cheese, eggs, and heavy cream. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.

Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.

In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs with the melted butter and sprinkle evenly over the top.

Bake for about 35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Sweet Potato and Goat Cheese Bake With Honey and Thyme

The twist: The combination of honey, thyme, and goat cheese gives this dish the flavor of something you would order at a restaurant.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 5 oz soft goat cheese
  • 3.5 oz shredded cheddar cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 tsp honey
  • Fresh thyme leaves
  • Coarse salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 400°F.

Spread the sweet potato cubes on a baking sheet, drizzle lightly with olive oil, and roast until soft and lightly golden, about 25 minutes.

Lower the oven temperature to 350°F.

In a bowl, combine the roasted sweet potatoes with the goat cheese, cheddar cheese, eggs, and sour cream. Stir in the honey and thyme, then season with coarse salt and black pepper.

Transfer to a greased baking dish and bake for about 40 minutes, until set and lightly browned on top.

Zucchini and Cheese Bake With Crispy Potato Topping

The twist: Instead of breadcrumbs, this bake is topped with paper thin potato slices that become crisp and golden in the oven.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium zucchini, grated and squeezed dry
  • 7 oz Bulgarian feta cheese, crumbled
  • 5 oz shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup cottage cheese
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3 tbsp all purpose flour
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 garlic clove, crushed
  • 2 small potatoes, very thinly sliced
  • Olive oil

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

In a large bowl, mix together the zucchini, cheeses, eggs, heavy cream, flour, garlic, salt, and black pepper.

Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.

Arrange the potato slices tightly on top in overlapping layers. Brush lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with a little coarse salt.

Bake for about 45 minutes, until the casserole is fully set and the potato topping is golden and crispy.

Serve immediately while the potato layer is still hot and crunchy. For extra freshness, sprinkle chopped chives on top before serving.
