“And if Torah scholars were to labor in Torah in its truest sense, they would save many children and many people from thoughts of sin and heresy and the like, through the abundance of their holiness, as a spirit of purity pours into the world.
And around a true master of Torah, we can clearly see a great influence on many people, something that no practical effort could achieve. There are even impressions upon those far away, though the human eye does not perceive them because of their subtlety.”
(Chazon Ish, Igrot Chazon Ish, vol. 3, 62)
What This Quote Means
The Chazon Ish reveals a powerful and challenging idea about the spiritual influence of authentic Torah study.
When Torah scholars learn Torah with complete sincerity, purity, devotion, and inner truth, their learning does not affect only themselves. According to the Chazon Ish, it spreads holiness throughout the world itself.
That spiritual influence can protect people from harmful thoughts, distance them from sin, and awaken greater purity within the soul, even without direct interaction, teaching, or persuasion.
The Chazon Ish emphasizes that the impact of genuine Torah learning is often invisible. A person may not see it with their eyes, but the spiritual effect still exists.
He explains that around a true Torah scholar, one can often sense a powerful influence on others, greater than what ordinary practical efforts alone could accomplish. And even people far away may be affected in subtle ways that are difficult to detect.
The Hidden Power of Torah Study
Many people dream of changing the world, helping others, or bringing people closer to holiness and faith.
The Chazon Ish teaches that sincere Torah study itself can become part of that mission.
Torah learned with truth and holiness is not merely personal growth. It becomes a spiritual force that radiates outward, bringing purity, strengthening souls, and increasing holiness in the world.
Sometimes, its effects may be far greater than we realize.
