"There's nothing for me to wear." "I don't like what's in my sandwich."

These are just some of the comments we hear during our morning routine. How can we make mornings run more smoothly so that everyone gets to school and work on time?

Answer:

Morning struggles often stem from the expectations we create about how mornings should look.

We imagine a calm and peaceful start to the day: the children wake up on their own, get dressed without resistance, Mom prepares breakfast, everyone sits around the table together, and the day begins smoothly.

When reality looks different, we become frustrated and disappointed.

How can we make mornings easier for both ourselves and our children?

Make Sure Your Child Gets Enough Sleep

The first step is ensuring that your child gets sufficient, high quality sleep.

Lack of sleep can affect a child's mood, concentration, behavior, and even healthy development. A well rested child is generally more cooperative and better equipped to handle the demands of the morning.

Create a Morning Routine Chart

A simple routine chart can be very effective. Choose a specific morning task that you would like your child to complete independently, such as:

  • Getting dressed

  • Brushing teeth

  • Packing a school bag

  • Making the bed

Each morning the child successfully completes the task, place a star or sticker on the chart. After earning a certain number of stars, offer a small reward or privilege.

This encourages responsibility while keeping the process positive.

Wake Up Before the Children

Another helpful strategy is for parents to wake up earlier than their children.

Use that time to:

  • Get dressed

  • Organize yourself

  • Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea

  • Mentally prepare for the day

When the children wake up, you will be calmer, more available, and better able to respond patiently to their needs.

Allow Plenty of Time

Try waking everyone up earlier than necessary so there is enough time to get ready without rushing.

A relaxed pace can significantly reduce tension and arguments.

Establish a Clear Departure Time

Set a specific time for leaving the house and stick to it.

It is important not to continually rescue children from the consequences of poor time management by writing late notes or making excuses. Allowing children to experience the natural consequences of being late can help them develop responsibility and better habits over time.

The Tone of the Morning Matters

A morning that begins with conflict often leaves the entire family feeling stressed, guilty, and emotionally drained.

On the other hand, a morning that starts with patience, encouragement, and even a simple smile can positively influence everyone's mood for the rest of the day.

While no family has perfect mornings every day, focusing on realistic expectations, good preparation, and consistent routines can make a remarkable difference.
