A fierce backlash is unfolding in the United Kingdom over the possibility that host Nadia Sawalha could return to television. Senior figures in Britain’s media and entertainment industry sent a formal, detailed 15-page letter this week to the leadership of ITV, demanding that the host not be allowed back following a series of antisemitic posts she shared on social media. The formal appeal, reported by the British newspaper the Daily Mail, comes amid reports that the network is considering returning her soon to the panel of the program where she previously appeared.
Sawalha, 61, has been off screen since the end of last April, after a major public controversy erupted over severe content she shared online, alongside harsh statements by her husband against Israel. Although the network did not issue an official announcement about her suspension, her prolonged absence from the program has raised many questions about her professional future at the channel.
The sharply worded letter was signed by a number of key figures in the British media world, including a former senior executive at the network in question, former BBC television director Danny Cohen, and the CEO of a major production company. The signatories make clear that the host spread false information and unmistakably antisemitic narratives, and that this was not legitimate criticism. In their view, returning her to her role would not align with the public responsibility expected of a media personality.
The host’s husband was himself recently suspended from the country’s Green Party after comparing Israel to Nazi Germany. The two also appeared together in various videos in which they presented different conspiracy theories connected to Israel. Despite the seriousness of the matter, the host chose to defend him publicly and praised him on social media.
The senior figures who signed the letter warn that returning her to broadcast could seriously damage the television channel’s reputation, and they note that Britain’s Jewish community is currently dealing with a significant spike in hate incidents. Alex Hearn of the organization "Labour Against Antisemitism" addressed the issue and said about the host that "she has been publishing outrageous content for a long time - it is time to take action against her". The host herself declined to comment on the allegations.
