It's the perfect side dish for Shabbat, holidays, or any comforting family meal.

Ingredients

(For one loaf pan / English cake pan)

  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and finely grated

  • ½ cup oil

  • ½ cup boiling water

  • 1 small onion, grated

  • 2 large eggs

Seasoning

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon chicken soup powder

  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

Prepare the Oven and Pan

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).

  2. Generously grease a loaf pan.

Make the Mixture

  1. In a large bowl, combine the grated potatoes and grated onion.

  2. Add the eggs and ¼ cup of the oil.

  3. Mix well until evenly combined.

Season

  1. Add the soup powder, salt, and black pepper.

  2. Stir thoroughly.

  3. Gradually pour in the boiling water while stirring continuously, ensuring the mixture remains smooth and well combined.

Bake

  1. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan.

  2. Smooth the top evenly.

  3. Brush or drizzle a little oil over the surface to help create a beautifully golden crust.

  4. Bake at 200°C (400°F) for about 1 hour.

  5. Reduce the oven temperature to 160°C (320°F) and continue baking for an additional 1 hour, until the kugel develops a deep golden color and a crisp top.

Cool Before Serving

  1. Remove the kugel from the oven.

  2. Allow it to cool completely at room temperature.

Important: Wait until the kugel has cooled before slicing. This helps it hold its shape and maintain its firm, attractive texture.
