Homemade Crispy Onion Rings

What You'll Need

For the onion rings:

  • 2 large onions

  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 2 tablespoons chicken soup powder (meat or pareve)

  • 1 egg

  • Breadcrumbs

For the batter:

  • 1 1/4 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 cup water

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1 quart oil, for deep frying

How to Make Them

Place the onions in a food processor and process until finely ground. Transfer the onions to a strainer or cheesecloth and squeeze out as much liquid as possible. Return the drained onions to the food processor.

Add the cornstarch, chicken soup powder, and egg. Process until a smooth, uniform mixture forms.

Transfer the mixture to a piping bag. Lightly grease a large tray and sprinkle it with a small amount of breadcrumbs. Pipe onion rings onto the tray in the desired size and shape.

Place the tray in the freezer for 24 hours.

The following day, carefully remove the frozen onion rings from the tray and return them to the freezer until ready to use.

Prepare the Batter

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, water, baking powder, and salt until smooth.

Fry the Onion Rings

Heat the oil in a deep pot or fryer.

Working straight from the freezer, dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off. Carefully place the rings into the hot oil and fry until golden brown and crispy on all sides.

Transfer the fried onion rings to a paper towel lined plate to drain excess oil.

Serve immediately and enjoy while hot and crunchy.
