There’s nothing better than a meal kids love to eat — but even better are recipes they love to make themselves.
Sweet chicken is one of children's favorite dishes: it's tender, flavorful, and easy to prepare. Following are three different sweet chicken recipes that kids can help make with minimal adult assistance (mainly for oven use and cutting), while filling the entire house with delicious aromas.
1. One-Pan Honey Soy Chicken
Ingredients
6 chicken drumsticks or chicken wings
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon ketchup
A drizzle of olive oil
Instructions
In a bowl, mix together the honey, soy sauce, ketchup, and olive oil.
Add the chicken and coat it well with the sauce.
Arrange the chicken in a baking dish.
Cover with parchment paper or aluminum foil.
Bake at 180°C (350°F) for about 40 minutes.
Remove the cover and bake for an additional 10 minutes until golden and caramelized.
2. Sweet-and-Sour Orange Chicken
A homemade version of the sweet-and-sour chicken often served in Chinese restaurants.
Ingredients
2 chicken breasts, cut into cubes
Juice of 1 orange
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon potato starch or cornstarch
Instructions
Place the chicken cubes in a bowl with a little oil, salt, and pepper.
Sauté the chicken in a lightly oiled skillet until cooked through.
In a small bowl, mix the orange juice, honey, soy sauce, ketchup, and starch.
Pour the sauce into the skillet.
Stir continuously until the sauce thickens.
Serve immediately.
3. Sweet Chicken Skewers
Fun, colorful, and perfect for kids.
Ingredients
Chicken breast cubes
1 tablespoon silan (date syrup)
1 tablespoon ketchup
A little oil
Skewers
Instructions
Mix the chicken cubes with the silan, ketchup, and oil.
Thread the chicken onto skewers. For extra color, alternate with vegetables such as bell peppers or zucchini.
Place on a baking tray.
Bake in the oven or toaster oven for 20–25 minutes at medium heat.
Bonus: A Chef’s Tip for Kids
Serve the chicken with white rice or mashed potatoes.
For a restaurant-style presentation, sprinkle a little toasted sesame seed or chopped chives on top.
The kids will feel like professional chefs — and the parents will be happy to do a little less work!
