At the same time, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi addressed the memorandum of understanding between his country and the U.S., arguing that one of its central clauses concerns ending the fighting on all fronts, and especially in Lebanon. According to him, the declaration ending the war in Lebanon took effect yesterday.
The Iranian foreign minister stressed that, from Tehran’s perspective, "there is a connection between the Lebanese arena and the confrontation with Iran. Because of the link that was created between the war in Lebanon and the aggression of the Zionist regime in southern Lebanon and the war with Iran, and since these two fronts became connected and somewhat dependent on one another, from the very first day, the Islamic Republic of Iran saw ending the war in Lebanon as one of the necessary conditions for ending the war with Iran."
He added, "Any Israeli attack or continuation of the occupation in Lebanon would be a violation of the ceasefire with the U.S. Because of difficulties in reaching an understanding, and because of the attacks by the U.S. and the Israeli regime against Iran, we decided to divide the negotiations into two stages. In the first stage, the end of the war, the Strait of Hormuz, the release of Iran’s frozen funds, and reconstruction were discussed. After that, the negotiations will continue for 60 days in order to reach a final agreement, in which the nuclear issue and the lifting of sanctions will be discussed."
