Two Israeli citizens, both around 40 years old, were killed Sunday in a single-car crash in the Malibu area of Los Angeles, California. Emergency crews found the vehicle badly damaged and declared both men dead at the scene after rescue efforts.

One of the victims was a local resident; the other was visiting as a tourist. No further details about their identities have been released while families are being notified.

ZAKA's international unit moved quickly to coordinate with American law enforcement and with the families of the victims to begin identification procedures and arrange for the transfer of the bodies to Israel for burial.

Haim Weingraten, Deputy Director of Operations at ZAKA, said: "ZAKA's international unit is working in full cooperation with the local authorities and accompanying the families through everything that is required. We are assisting in the identification process and in advancing the procedures needed for the continuation of care."

Weingraten said the unit is in direct contact with both American law enforcement and the bereaved families in Israel, working to move all necessary steps forward as quickly as possible.

The exact circumstances of the crash and what caused the driver to lose control have not been made public by California authorities. The Malibu area, along the Pacific Coast Highway northwest of Los Angeles, is known for its winding coastal roads and sees a high number of traffic accidents each year.

ZAKA's international unit regularly handles cases involving Israeli citizens who die abroad, providing support from identification and documentation through to coordination with foreign authorities on returning the deceased to Israel for burial.
