The Iranian and American delegations began talks this afternoon (Sunday) as part of negotiations aimed at ending the war. The United States is being represented by Vice President JD Vance, and Iran by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Also taking part in the talks are Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed Al Thani, serving as mediators.

It should be noted that the Iranians announced in advance that the first meeting, today, would be devoted to ending the fighting in Lebanon and to their demand for an IDF withdrawal. Only after that issue is resolved, according to the Iranians, will it be possible to discuss other matters.

In his statement at the start of the meeting, the American vice president addressed that point: "We have made significant progress in recent hours regarding a ceasefire in Lebanon. President Trump is committed to a full regional ceasefire. We have seen substantial progress in recent days in securing a ceasefire in Lebanon".

"What we are trying to achieve here is something very simple: through diplomacy, by working together to change the Middle East. While Iran has been a force for regional instability, we now see a future in which everyone can work together. Iran has agreed to reduce the level of enrichment. President Trump asked us to change our relationship with Iran. He wants us to extend a hand to the Iranians and make it possible for them to give up nuclear weapons, We have already made a great deal of progress in just the past few hours, and I expect us to make further progress in the coming hours".

Pakistani Prime Minister Sharif said: "I hope that when we return home, we will have in hand a great document that advances peace, progress, and prosperity around the world." Majid bin Mohammed Al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, added: "Special technical and expert groups have been established to negotiate the terms of the final agreement, covering all aspects of the memorandum of understanding. Monitoring groups have also been established to oversee the implementation of the memorandum of understanding and to track progress toward a final agreement, demonstrating the commitment of all parties to advance the negotiation process in good faith and to achieve a comprehensive and lasting agreement."

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who is not in Switzerland, addressed the nuclear issue: "We will never give up our right to enrich uranium, and the other side will have no choice but to accept that. In the past, they demanded that Iran’s missiles also be part of the negotiations, but now they say that just as other countries have missiles, Iran too should have the right to possess ballistic missiles. The rules of the game have changed."
