The Month of Elul
Elul: Awakening Your Divine Spark and Renewing Your Connection with God
Profound teachings of the Sefat Emet on the month of Elul, the hidden spark of holiness within every Jew, and how this special season helps us reconnect with our true selves, elevate our souls, and draw closer to God

If a child constantly asks his father for more candy, the father will not always agree. A father has many considerations to weigh. Has the child earned it? Has he already eaten too many sweets? Did he eat a proper meal? Is this truly good for him? Taking all these factors into account, the father may ultimately say, “No.”
If that same child spots a beloved uncle nearby and asks him for a treat, the response is often very different. An uncle is usually far more generous and easygoing. He gives freely, not because he has carefully calculated whether the child deserves it, but because that is his nature. He simply wants to give.
This, in a sense, is the essence of the month of Elul.
The Special Gift of Elul
During Elul, God reveals Himself to us as a loving “Beloved” (Dod - uncle), showering us with abundant kindness. Not with candy falling from the heavens, but something far more valuable — a special abundance of spiritual awakening and inner inspiration. Elul is a uniquely favorable time, a season of opportunity that should not be wasted.
Our sages teach, “When Elul enters, we increase our repentance”. These are exceptionally auspicious days, filled with spiritual potential.
For those who find the season overwhelming and secretly hope that the Selichot prayers and High Holy Days will quickly pass, the following insight from the Sefat Emet offers a beautiful perspective.
Rather than viewing Elul as a burden, the Sefat Emet teaches us to see it as an opportunity to reconnect with something precious that already exists within us.
The Pure Point Within Every Jew
The Sefat Emet explains that deep within every Jew there exists a pure point of holiness that no sin, failure, or impurity can ever reach. It is the “locked garden” and the “sealed fountain” described in Shir HaShirim. Within that innermost point, our love for God remains pure, vibrant, and alive.
No matter what mistakes we have made, no matter how distant we may feel, this inner point remains untouched, and continues to wait for us.
The Layers That Hide Our True Self
Our animal soul often builds layers around that sacred core. Life’s disappointments, struggles, wounds, and traumas create protective barriers. While these defenses may help us cope, they also have an unfortunate side effect: they distance us from our authentic selves.
Over time, we become disconnected from the deepest part of who we truly are. We forget what excites us spiritually. We lose touch with the pure love and enthusiasm that once came naturally.
The point itself remains intact, but it becomes hidden beneath layers of habit, fear, distraction, and pain.
Elul Is Associated with the Maiden
This is why Elul is so precious.
The zodiac sign associated with Elul is Virgo, the Maiden, symbolizing purity, renewal, and the possibility of beginning again. Elul is a time uniquely suited for awakening that hidden love and reconnecting with the pure point that lies within us.
It is a season of spiritual renewal, a time when we can uncover what has been buried and rediscover what has been forgotten.
The Sefat Emet further explains that Elul is not only about awakening the Divine soul. It is also a time when even the animal soul can be elevated and refined.
This idea is reflected in the fact that Elul is traditionally the New Year for tithing livestock, symbolizing the elevation of our more physical nature. The goal is not to suppress the material side of life, but to uplift it and direct it toward holiness.
The King Is in the Field
Most importantly, Elul is the season when “the King is in the field.”
God draws close to us, making Himself more accessible than at any other time of the year. During these days, we are given the opportunity to renew our inner relationship with Him and to experience the truth of the verse:
“I am to my Beloved, and my Beloved is to me.”
The first step belongs to us — we move toward Him. Yet at the same time, we discover that He has already drawn close to us.
A Time to Taste Spiritual Closeness
Elul is not merely a preparation for Rosh Hashanah. It is a gift in its own right — a month filled with opportunity, renewal, and love.
It is a time to peel away the layers that conceal our true selves, reconnect with the pure point within, and experience a deeper relationship with our Creator.
May we merit to taste this closeness in a real and tangible way, and may we discover within ourselves the pure and beautiful point that has been waiting all along to be awakened.
