A Paris Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday to uphold the conviction of French right-wing leader Marine Le Pen in the European Parliament embezzlement case, while significantly reducing the period during which she is barred from holding public office. As a result of the ruling, Le Pen is now expected to be eligible to run in France's presidential election in April 2027.

Le Pen, 57, appealed the original verdict issued on March 31, 2025, after she was convicted of misusing European Parliament funds in a long-running case involving the way her party, the National Rally, employed parliamentary assistants.

In the original ruling, the Paris Criminal Court imposed an immediate five-year ban from holding public office, a decision that effectively prevented her from running for president even while her appeal was pending. She was also sentenced to four years in prison, two of which were suspended, and fined €100,000.

In Tuesday's appeal ruling, the judges affirmed Le Pen's conviction but reduced her period of ineligibility for public office to 45 months. Since 30 months of that period have already elapsed, only 15 months remain, meaning she is legally eligible to run in the 2027 presidential election.

The court also upheld the €100,000 fine and revised her prison sentence to three years, with two years suspended. Under the new ruling, she will be required to serve the remaining year of her sentence under electronic monitoring by wearing an ankle bracelet.

Both Le Pen and France's Prosecutor General have 10 days to appeal the decision to the Court of Cassation, France's highest court for civil and criminal matters, which reviews the application of the law rather than the facts of a case.

Despite the option of a further appeal, Le Pen has previously stated that she does not intend to pursue another legal challenge, arguing that a prolonged period of legal uncertainty would undermine her ability to campaign for the presidency. She has also said that she would not conduct a presidential campaign while wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet.
