Israel's Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday that security personnel thwarted an unusual smuggling attempt at the Lachish Crossing, where thousands of cigarettes were discovered concealed inside hundreds of pineapples destined for the Gaza Strip.

The shipment was detected by the security inspection teams of the Ministry of Defense's Crossings Authority, which identified the concealed contraband during routine screening procedures. The findings were immediately reported to representatives of the Judea Coordination and Liaison Administration for further investigation.

According to the ministry, the truck was transporting a shipment purchased by an Israeli company that had been authorized to participate in the private-sector humanitarian aid mechanism for Gaza. The cargo was scheduled to pass through the Kerem Shalom Crossing as part of the humanitarian assistance entering the Strip.

The truck and its entire cargo have been confiscated and transferred to Israel Customs and other relevant enforcement authorities for further investigation and legal proceedings.

In response to the incident, the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), Maj. Gen. Yoram Halevi, ordered the immediate suspension of the company's authorization to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip until further notice.

Investigative authorities noted that several smuggling networks uncovered over the past year have generated millions of shekels in illicit profits, highlighting the significant financial incentives behind attempts to smuggle prohibited goods into Gaza.
