Can You Slow Aging? Study Finds Daily Habits That May Help

New research suggests that yogurt, regular exercise, and a healthy diet may slow biological aging in as little as 12 weeks

Can the aging process be slowed? A new clinical study from Japan suggests that a few simple lifestyle changes may produce measurable benefits at the cellular level and significantly slow biological aging.

The 12 week study followed a group of men between the ages of 50 and 74. Participants were asked to adopt just three basic habits: eat 100 grams of plain yogurt every day, maintain a balanced diet with minimal snacking and no sugary drinks, and engage in moderate physical activity, such as walking for 30 minutes, at least three times a week.

To measure the effects on the body, researchers used an advanced tool called the DunedinPACE biological aging clock, which estimates the rate at which the body is aging biologically. The results were striking. Participants who consistently followed the new routine experienced an average 2.2% reduction in the pace of biological aging after just three months.

For comparison, the researchers noted that this improvement is similar to the reduction in biological aging previously observed after two years of maintaining a 25% reduction in daily calorie intake.

Perhaps the most surprising finding was that the improvement occurred independently of weight loss or changes in body mass index (BMI). Researchers also observed improvements in markers associated with kidney function.

However, the scientists emphasized that the health benefits could not be attributed to any single component of the program. Instead, the positive effects appeared to result from the combination of a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

Although the study involved a relatively small number of participants and further research is needed to confirm the long term effects, the findings suggest that adopting simple, sustainable lifestyle habits that combine healthy eating with regular movement may offer a practical way to support overall health and slow the body's biological aging process.
