Why Do We Forget Our Dreams So Quickly? New Research Reveals the Answer
Scientists uncover the surprising factors that influence dream recall, from sleep patterns and age to alarm clocks, mind-wandering, and even the season of the year

One moment, you still remember everything: where you were, who was standing in front of you, and even how you felt. You open your eyes, reach for your phone, and within moments, the dream simply disappears. A large study that followed more than 200 people for two weeks found that remembering dreams is not simply a matter of having a “good memory.” Sleep stage, age, the tendency for the mind to wander, and even the season of the year may influence whether a dream survives in your memory until morning.
The tendency of dreams to fade so quickly is one of the most intriguing phenomena in sleep research. A study published in February 2025 in Communications Psychology adds new pieces to the puzzle and suggests that the answer is far more complicated than it might seem.
Many people say, “I don’t dream at all.” Scientifically, however, it may be more accurate to say, “I don’t remember my dreams.” Studies in which people are awakened during different stages of sleep show that dream experiences are not limited to REM sleep. The researchers behind the new study note that when participants are awakened in a laboratory, dreams with reportable content are recalled, on average, after about 85 percent of awakenings from REM sleep and about 45 percent of awakenings from NREM sleep.
In other words, waking up without any memory of a dream does not prove that you did not dream. The dream may have been there, but the memory of it may not have made the transition into wakefulness intact.
Researchers Tracked Dreams for 15 Days
To understand why some dreams survive while others disappear, researchers in Italy studied 217 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 70. For 15 days, participants were asked to report their most recent dream experience immediately after waking naturally at home.
At the same time, researchers monitored their sleep and wake patterns and collected psychological and cognitive data. Some participants also slept with a portable EEG device that measured brain activity during the night.
The researchers distinguished between three interesting situations.
In the first, a person woke up remembering both the dream and its content. In the second, the person knew with certainty that they had dreamed but could not remember what the dream was about. In the third, the person woke up with no sense of having dreamed at all.
The second situation may be the most familiar: you know that just moments ago there was an entire story in your mind, but as soon as you try to grasp it, it is already gone.
Why Do Dreams Disappear So Quickly?
One of the important findings of the study is that dream recall does not depend solely on our general memory abilities. The researchers found that the likelihood of reporting a dream in the morning was associated with a combination of factors, including a person’s attitude toward and interest in dreams, their tendency toward mind-wandering, and their sleep patterns.
In other words, two people can sleep the same number of hours and both dream during the night, yet one may wake up and recount a detailed dream while the other is convinced that they did not dream at all.
Researchers use the term “white dream” to describe a particularly strange experience: a person wakes up with the clear knowledge that they dreamed but is unable to retrieve any details about the dream itself. The memory that a dream occurred remains, but the story is gone.
The study also found that the ability to remember dream content was associated with what researchers call “interference susceptibility,” meaning the degree to which competing information interferes with our cognitive processes.
This is particularly interesting because it offers a possible explanation for why a dream that seemed perfectly clear in the first moments after waking can turn into a blur once we begin thinking about other things.
Even the Way We Wake Up May Matter
Another scientific review published in 2025 examined 69 awakening studies conducted between 2000 and 2024 and found that the way people wake up may also influence dream recall.
Among other findings, the use of an alarm clock was associated with lower dream recall compared with situations in which participants were awakened by someone calling their name. The sleep environment and individual differences also affected recall rates.
In other words, what happens during the dream is not the only thing that matters. The way we make the transition from sleep to wakefulness may also influence how much of the dream we are able to remember afterward.
Even the Season May Play a Role
One of the study’s most intriguing findings came from a completely unexpected direction.
Because the data were collected over four years, from 2020 to 2024, researchers were able to investigate whether dream recall varied according to the season. They found that participants were less likely to report remembering a dream in the morning during winter than during spring, even after accounting for several other factors that could have influenced the results.
The researchers are not claiming that winter somehow “erases” dreams. This was a statistical association that requires further research to understand. Still, it highlights just how complex dream recall appears to be and how it may be influenced by a combination of many different factors.
Can You Train Yourself to Remember More Dreams?
If you want to experiment with this yourself, one of the simplest methods is to keep a notebook or recording device beside your bed and record whatever you remember immediately after waking.
You do not need to begin with an entire story. You might simply write down three words: “train station, grandmother, rain.”
Sometimes those small details can serve as clues, helping you retrieve additional pieces of the dream before they disappear.
