Did You Lock the Door? How Your Brain’s Autopilot Really Works

From reaching for your phone to locking the door, your brain automates familiar behaviors. here’s how habits form and how to make them work for you.

Have you ever left the house and suddenly wondered, “Wait, did I lock the door?” Or walked into a dark room and found your hand reaching almost automatically for exactly where the light switch is?

We like to think that we make a conscious decision before every action, but in reality, the brain can carry out many of our everyday activities with very little conscious attention. That doesn’t mean we are really “sleepwalking through life.” Rather, it reflects one of the remarkably efficient qualities that Hashem built into the human brain.

Your Brain Likes to Save Effort

Think about the first time you learned to drive, ride a bike, or even type quickly. At first, every action required attention: Where do I put my hands? What do I do now? What comes next?

After enough practice, something changes. The brain learns the sequence of actions, and performing them becomes easier and faster, requiring less conscious attention. This process is known as “automaticity.”

The advantage is obvious. If we had to think carefully about every step while walking, every movement while brushing our teeth, or every letter we type, we would quickly become mentally exhausted and have far less attention available for more complex tasks.

How Much of Our Day Really Runs on “Autopilot”?

There is no single scientifically accepted percentage that tells us exactly how much of human behavior is automatic. What researchers do know is that a significant portion of everyday behavior is influenced by habits and automatic processes, particularly when it comes to familiar actions we have repeated many times.

In other words, much of daily life consists of recurring patterns, and our brains become increasingly efficient at carrying them out.

How Does an Action Become a Habit?

The brain learns to associate a particular situation or cue with an action that repeatedly follows it.

You get into the car—you fasten your seat belt.

You finish eating—you clear your plate.

You enter your home—you put your keys in their usual place.

You hear a notification—you reach for your phone.

The more often the connection between a situation and an action is repeated, the more easily that action can begin to happen without requiring a new conscious decision each time. This is also one reason certain habits can be so difficult to change.

When a good habit becomes automatic, it can make life much easier. Someone who always puts their keys in the same place no longer needs to search for them every morning. Someone who gets into the habit of preparing a bottle of water before leaving home doesn’t have to remind themselves each time.

We already benefit from countless habits that serve us well, and we can use the brain’s tendency toward automaticity to our advantage.

At the same time, the same mechanism can work in the opposite direction.

We open our phone “just to check the time” and, before we know it, find ourselves scrolling. We open a kitchen cabinet out of boredom even though we aren’t hungry. Or we take our usual route to work, only to suddenly remember that we were supposed to be going somewhere else.

These are moments when habit gets ahead of conscious thought.

Why Can’t We Remember Whether We Locked the Door?

When we perform a familiar action while thinking about something else, we may not give the moment enough attention to form a clear memory of it.

So yes, you may really have locked the door. The problem is that a few minutes later, you cannot clearly remember doing it.

One simple strategy is to deliberately direct your attention to the action. When locking the door, for example, pause for a second and consciously tell yourself, “I locked the door.” That extra moment of attention can help the memory register more clearly.

The same principle can also help when building new habits.

Try attaching a new behavior to something that is already part of your routine. After your morning coffee, drink a glass of water. After dinner, take a short walk. Before going to bed, spend five minutes organizing what you need for the next day.

The more consistently you repeat the same behavior in the same context, the easier and more natural it can become over time.

Our brains are constantly learning from repetition. The habits we build today can eventually become the actions we barely have to think about tomorrow—so it is worth choosing those habits carefully.
