Clear Phone Case Turned Yellow? Try This Viral Trick

A yellowed phone case may seem impossible to save, but one viral cleaning trick promises a dramatic transformation in less than 30 minutes.

A clear phone case is often the natural choice for anyone who wants to protect their device without hiding its original design. But after just a few months, that once-transparent case can start looking yellow, cloudy, and visibly dirty. At that point, many people assume the material is permanently discolored and simply throw it away.

But a viral cleaning trick shared by the YouTube channel InnoRative claims even a badly yellowed case can be restored.

“As you can see, it’s very yellow,” the creator says while demonstrating a method that uses several household and chemical products to tackle the discoloration.

The Viral Trick for a Yellowed Phone Case

Instead of simply scrubbing the case with soap and water, the method involves soaking it in a mixture containing laundry detergent, vinegar, and paint thinner.

The creator also uses tissues throughout the process, explaining that they help keep the cleaning mixture in contact with the case. “The tissues will help stick to the case and remove it better,” he says.

The process begins by placing a tissue at the bottom of an empty plastic bowl, adding a small amount of laundry detergent and water, and mixing them together. Another layer of tissue is then added, followed by vinegar. The clear case is placed in the mixture and left to soak for five minutes.

Next comes the key ingredient in the video: a small amount of paint thinner. The case is covered with another tissue and left in the mixture for another 20 to 30 minutes.

After removing the case, the creator examines the result. “It looks good, but we have to dry it first,” he says before drying it thoroughly and revealing a noticeably clearer case.

But Is It Worth Trying?

There is an important reason to be cautious with this particular hack. Paint thinner contains strong solvents, and formulations vary considerably. Depending on the type of plastic or flexible polymer used in the case, a solvent could potentially damage, soften, cloud, or weaken the material. It can also irritate the skin and produce potentially harmful fumes.

Anyone attempting a method involving paint thinner should follow the product’s safety instructions carefully, use it only with adequate ventilation, avoid skin and eye contact, and keep it away from flames and heat sources. It is also worth checking the case manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations first.

There is another criticism of the viral trick: Is all that effort even worthwhile? Some viewers pointed out that buying laundry detergent, vinegar, and paint thinner specifically for the experiment could cost more than simply replacing an inexpensive clear case.

So while the dramatic before-and-after result may make for a satisfying cleaning video, whether the trick is practical—or appropriate for every phone case—is another question entirely.
