UK Terror Investigation: Two Latvian Nationals Arrested Near RAF Base

Two Latvian nationals were arrested near a Royal Air Force base in Cambridgeshire, England, on suspicion of security offenses. Police say the case is not connected to recent events at RAF Fairford, where American bombers had been stationed.

British police are investigating two men from Latvia who were arrested near a Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Cambridgeshire. Reuters reported the news today, Thursday.

Police said the two were initially arrested on suspicion of trespassing at a prohibited site and causing criminal damage. They were later rearrested on suspicion of an offense under the 2023 National Security Act, specifically, "entering a prohibited place for a purpose harmful to the UK."

"We are very aware of the recent interest and growing concern surrounding military facilities, but at this stage there is no indication that the current incident is connected to events at RAF Fairford last week," Helen Flanagan, head of the London police counterterrorism unit, said in a statement.

Her comments referred to a separate incident at RAF Fairford, which was used by American bombers for a strike against Iran, where several men were arrested on suspicion of a plot the government linked to Iran.

Regarding Thursday's arrests, police said they are also searching two properties in the Peterborough area as part of the investigation. Police located an abandoned vehicle, which was later examined by bomb disposal experts, but nothing suspicious was found inside.
