MI5 Chief Warns of Escalating Iranian Threats After Suspected Attack on UK Air Base
British intelligence chief Ken McCallum reports a significant shift in Tehran's activities, citing a suspected attack on a UK air base and more than 50 Iran-related arrests.
IllustrationThe head of Britain's domestic intelligence service, Ken McCallum, warned today (Tuesday) that Iran is "escalating its ambitions to strike more sensitive and better-protected targets, including military installations."
According to a report by Channel 12 News, McCallum made the remarks during his annual address on security threats facing Britain and its allies. He pointed to a "significant shift" in Tehran's ambitions, describing last month's suspected attempt to target RAF Fairford as part of a broader pattern.
McCallum said the September 27 attempt to target Fairford was not an isolated incident. He noted that "there have been additional instances of similar threats against facilities, not only in Britain but around the world, and particularly in the region where Iran is located."
While he declined to provide details about other attempts or their intended targets, he stressed that the "intensity, scale and nature" of the Iranian threat are currently changing.
About a month ago, reports emerged of an attempted strike on RAF Fairford, the British air base used by American bombers during strikes against Iran. Following the incident, the United States withdrew 12 B-1 bombers from the base. In recent weeks, at least seven suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.
McCallum added that British authorities have made more than 50 arrests over the past 12 months as part of "Iran-related operations."
